One of the most spectacular coastal stretches is certainly that which lies a little further to the north of Santa Maria Navarrese, in the territory of Baunei. Powerful, white, calcareous mountains - such as P. Giràdili (over 700 m) and M. Ginnircu (over 800) - follow each other as far as the wild cliffs of Capo di M. Santu which closes the Gulf of Orosei to the south: they rise almost sheer to the sea with their grandiose rock prominences and steep scarps, covered with bushes, below. One of the big rocks, either fallen into the sea from these steep mountains or isolated here by water and wind erosion, is the stupendous Pedra Longa, 128 metres high. Certainly it is a more than worthy conclusion of the Gennargentu’s park, on the south-eastern side of the territory protected.
This coast is also called Agugliastra and lies in the vast subregion of Ogliastra, which has possibly derived its name from it, according to many scholars, not from olivastro (wild olive tree).
Certainly, another name could not have been more representative of this very beautiful region, in so far as the enormous pinnacle “sums up” by itself the whole of the interminable series of Ogliastra’s charming, natural attractions. These are obviously and fortunately more and more searched for by visitors over its whole territory, both on the coasts and in the hinterland.
