Sardinia HEART OF THE MEDITERRANEAN

A few miles to south of the well-known seaside resort of Cala Gonone, the famous beach of Cala Luna lies at the foot of the splendid cliffs of the Gulf of Orosei: among the most beautiful beaches in the whole Mediterranean. The scenography of this corner of paradise is particular, indeed: its arc shaped shore extends for almost seven hundred metres; its sea has fantastic, deep-green reflections thanks to its shallow or medium-depth waters and its sandy or pebbly sea-beds. The southern part of the beach is characterized by a tiny, fresh-water lake, at its back, once teeming with fish: later on it has been filled up with earth and invaded by vegetation since 1980. It is still surrounded by the marvellous blooms of a dense small wood of arboreous oleanders, as high as six metres. The wide hinterland get narrower in the tortuous and deep gorge of the Codula di Luna, one of the wildest and most uncontaminated environments on the island as well as a destination for very many trekkers. The northern part of the splendid shore is overlooked by a high, steep, calcareous cliff, at the foot of which seven gigantic caves - excavated by the sea in geologically remote times - open, thus enhancing the indescribable suggestion of this cove. Let’s exort everybody to be respectful of this exceptional nature and not to leave rubbish. The nearby Grotta del Bue Marino is as much famous: it once was the living place of the last specimens of the monk seal, by now very rare.
