Sardinia HEART OF THE MEDITERRANEAN

The coast south of Olbia reveals its most fascinating places in the territory of the well known tourist area of San Teodoro, in the province of Nuoro. It is a steadily growing seaside resort, above all thanks to the large number of beautiful beaches along the 35 kilometres of its coastline. One of the most typical areas, to the north, is represented by the long peninsula that juts out, to the south-east of the promontory of Mount Pedrosu, into the Tyrrhenian Sea with its end, named Capo Coda Cavallo (Horse Tail Cape) because of its curious shape. The northern side of the peninsula has a variety of beaches such as Cala Purgatorio, Cala Suaraccia or spiaggia delle Farfalle (=beach of the Butterflies, near the homonymous village) and little Cala Lastra Ruia, or spiaggia dell’Acqua (beach of the Water); on the opposite side, the beaches of Salina Bamba (next to the village of Porto Coda Cavallo) and Salinedda. The most enchanting beach is undoubtedly Cala Coda Cavallo, on the northern side of the homonymous cape: it is washed by a water with fantastic transparences and faced by the nearby small island of Proratora and the islands of Molara and Tavolara. It is not easy to describe the exceptional view from this beach or from the near Villaggio Est. Furthermore, from the summit of the very panoramic Monte Coda Cavallo, which is within easy walking distance, one sees: to the southward, the lovely coast of San Teodoro, with the long, white expanse of La Cinta beach and the large pond of San Teodoro, near the village. To the north, the above mentioned island of Proratora, not far from the headland’s shore and, in the distance, the verdant island of Molara and the impeding bulk of the wild Tavolara. All this contributes to form one of most striking coastal corners in the whole of the Mediterranean.
